The Death of Salience

One of the saddest discoveries on social media requires less than thirty seconds. You scroll past short videos posted by people you vaguely know, and a realization settles over you: nothing matters because everything is presented as if it matters equally. Salience disappears. In its place is detritus.

The mind becomes a bulldozer, endlessly scooping up gravel, dust, broken fragments, and digital debris, then consuming it without reflection. In this endless procession, urgent news loses its urgency, genuine insight is buried beneath trivia, and the ability to distinguish the significant from the insignificant begins to erode.

Social media’s final achievement is not simply distraction but entropy. It levels every hierarchy of importance until the spirit is flattened, meaning dissolves into noise, and chaos masquerades as reality.
