Authority figures often shepherd students straight into this trap. They preach the gospel of STEM as if it were both economic salvation and moral virtue, a modern scientific priesthood with guaranteed rewards. What they rarely mention is the cost of over-specialization. The STEM acolyte can emerge so tightly focused that they resemble a racehorse in blinders—powerful, disciplined, and nearly helpless when the track disappears. When the labor market swerves and demands a pivot, these graduates discover they were never trained to see the larger terrain, much less navigate it.
